Galen of Pergamon (129–200 CE) was one of the most influential medical figures of the ancient world. A Greek physician and philosopher, his teachings shaped medical practice across the Roman Empire and became the foundation of Western medicine for over 1,000 years. Galen compiled extensive works on anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and disease theory. Most of his conclusions were based on logical reasoning and animal dissection, which made his work prone to inaccuracies when applied to human biology. Despite this, Galen's theories were treated as absolute truths in medieval Europe.

Over time, many of Galen’s medical claims were proven to be wrong. Muslim scholars from the Islamic Golden Age were the first to systematically analyze, test, and correct his errors through observation, clinical experience, and scientific reasoning. Their work laid the foundation for modern medicine long before the European Renaissance. Later on, European scholars built upon these corrections but were often credited as the original discoverers, while the Muslim contributions were ignored or forgotten.

The Bimaristan: A Forgotten Legacy

In the year 805 CE, during the peak of the Islamic Golden Age, Caliph Harun al-Rashid ordered the construction of a revolutionary new institution in Baghdad. It wasn’t a temple, and it wasn’t a home for the dying, it was a hospital. A place designed to treat illness, with dedicated physicians, nurses, pharmacies, and even medical records. It was called the Bimaristan al-Rashidi. The word bimaristan comes from Persian, meaning “place of the sick.”¹

This wasn’t a place for just the elite or the privileged. It was free for everyone no matter your background, status, or religion. If you were sick, they took care of you.

And it didn’t stop there.

Medicine Meets Morals

The Muslim world didn’t just build hospitals. They created an entire medical system based on ethics, science, and compassion centuries before Europe would catch up.

• Doctors had to be licensed after passing exams.

• Men and women were treated in separate wards for dignity and safety.

• Mentally ill patients weren’t locked away instead they were given gardens, music therapy, and care.

• Every bimaristan had libraries, lecture halls, and pharmacies stocked with carefully measured medicines.²

The idea was simple but profound: healing the body was a sacred duty.

What Is an Engine? – Defining the Core

The term "engine" originally comes from the Latin word ingenium, meaning a clever invention or mechanical device. Before cars and airplanes, the word applied broadly to any mechanism that converted energy into movement or work.

By modern definition, an engine is:

"A machine designed to convert one form of energy into mechanical energy." [1]

That means everything from a steam-driven wheel to a hydraulic pump could qualify. This definition helps us see the true scope of the engine’s history—not as a European invention, but as a legacy of human innovation stretching across civilizations.

Ancient Beginnings – The First Engine Concepts

Before we get to Hero of Alexandria, it's important to understand the earlier minds that laid the groundwork for engine concepts:

• Philo of Byzantium (3rd century BCE): Developed air-powered mechanisms and siphons, including a primitive fire extinguisher and an early idea of pressure-based systems. [3]

• Vitruvius (1st century BCE): Roman architect and engineer who documented various mechanical devices including water wheels and hoists, setting the stage for later inventions. [4]

Then, in 1st-century CE Roman Egypt, an inventor named Hero of Alexandria created the aeolipile, a steam-powered device that spun on its axis when heated—an early steam engine in all but name. [2]

Though it wasn’t used for industrial work, the aeolipile proved that humans could convert heat into motion nearly 1,700 years before Watt.

For centuries, schoolbooks have taught that Isaac Newton discovered the laws of motion and gravity. But what if that story is incomplete? What if the real origins of these laws go back centuries earlier—across continents, languages, and civilizations?

Modern physics owes much to Newton, but attributing the discovery of motion and gravity solely to him is misleading. Long before Newton published his Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica in 1687, scholars in the Islamic world had already formulated similar principles. These thinkers laid the intellectual groundwork that Newton would later build upon—a fact that has been largely erased from popular history.

When we say "Islamic world," we are referring specifically to the Islamic Golden Age (8th to 14th century CE), a time when Muslim-ruled societies across the Middle East, North Africa, Persia, Central Asia, and Andalusia (modern-day Spain) became global centers of learning. During this period, scholars of various backgrounds—including Arabs, Persians, Berbers, Jews, and Christians—thrived under Islamic governance that encouraged scholarship. Institutions like the House of Wisdom in Baghdad translated Greek, Persian, and Indian texts into Arabic and expanded on them through original research, laying the foundations of modern science, medicine, mathematics, and philosophy.

When we hear about the origins of surgery, we’re taught about modern hospitals, European breakthroughs, and 19th-century medicine. But few are ever told the story of Al-Zahrawi, a 10th-century Muslim polymath whose influence shaped surgical practice for over 500 years.

The title “Father of Surgery” is often given to European names like Ambroise Paré or John Hunter, but long before them, a physician in Muslim Spain laid the foundations of surgical science. His name was Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi (Latinized as Albucasis), and his contributions to medicine were so advanced that his work remained a standard textbook in European medical schools for centuries.

Born in 936 CE in Al-Andalus (modern-day Córdoba, Spain), Al-Zahrawi lived during the Islamic Golden Age, a period marked by scientific innovation, cultural flourishing, and cross-cultural intellectual exchange. His most famous work, a thirty-volume medical encyclopedia titled Al-Tasrif, became one of the most influential medical texts of the medieval world. The final volume was dedicated entirely to surgical procedures and instruments, the first of its kind in recorded history【1】.

But behind the soft colors and sentimental cards lies a story most people have never been told. The modern version of Valentine’s Day is a carefully rebranded tradition, shaped by pagan rituals, Roman politics, Christian martyrdom, and corporate marketing—not universal human affection.

Before it was ever associated with Saint Valentine, February 14 was the date of an ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia, celebrated from February 13 to 15. Lupercalia was a fertility rite honoring the she-wolf that nursed Romulus and Remus, Rome’s mythical founders. According to Roman mythology, Romulus and Remus were twin brothers who were abandoned as babies and left to die. A wild she-wolf found them, nursed them, and kept them alive until they were discovered by a shepherd. When they grew up, Romulus killed Remus during a dispute and went on to become the founder of the city of Rome. The she-wolf became a symbol of strength and protection in Roman culture. During the festival, Roman priests (the Luperci) would sacrifice goats and dogs, smear the blood on themselves, and then run through the city streets striking women with thongs made from the hides. This was believed to encourage fertility and ease childbirth. It was violent, sexual, and deeply pagan【1】.

We think of time as something natural—universal, objective, neutral. But time, as we live it today, is not a reflection of nature. It’s a reflection of power. The seven-day week, the names of the months, the beginning of the year, and even which days we rest—all of it was altered by empires that used time to control the rhythm of civilization. Before time was mathematical, it was sacred. And before it became standardized, it was rooted in the sky, the moon, and the earth’s natural turning.

Ancient cultures organized time by observing celestial patterns. The Babylonians used lunar months, the Egyptians tracked the heliacal rising of Sirius, and the Maya designed intricate calendars around solar and Venusian cycles. Time was not imposed; it was lived. Nature was the clock. Months began with the new moon, not with artificial numbers. Seasonal festivals were anchored in harvest and survival, not profit or state rituals. It was a way of life that aligned humanity with its surroundings.

That changed when empires rose and centralized power. One of the most impactful calendar shifts came under Julius Caesar in 45 BCE. Dissatisfied with the lunar-based Roman calendar, he introduced the Julian calendar, a solar-based system modeled after the Egyptian one. But this reform wasn’t just about seasonal accuracy. It was about imperial order. Months were renamed to honor leaders such as July for Julius, August for Augustus and the calendar became a canvas for political immortality. The original Roman names rooted in nature and numbers (like Quintilis and Sextilis, meaning “fifth” and “sixth”) were replaced by tributes to emperors.
