Carving Arrogance into Stone

After the destruction of Ad in Al-Ahqaf a region believed to be in present-day Yemen or Oman. Another ancient Arab tribe rose: the people of Thamud. Though they lived in a different region Al-Ḥijr, in northwestern Arabia near Mada’in Salih and Al-Ula, they followed the same path of arrogance and met the same fate. They weren’t some weak or backward tribe. They were strong, skilled, smart and they were proud of it.

They carved homes straight into the sides of solid mountains, thinking nothing could ever destroy them.

“And [with] Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the valley?” — Qur’an 89:9

But strength without humility leads to arrogance. And arrogance closes the heart to truth.

So Allah sent them a prophet from among their own people — Salih (peace be upon him). He wasn’t a stranger. He wasn’t sent to destroy them. He came with a message: worship Allah alone and stop your corruption before it’s too late.

But instead of listening, they mocked him. Like others before them, they demanded a miracle. They pointed to a massive rock and said: “If you’re really a messenger of God, make a she-camel come out of this stone.” and then by Allah’s will, it happened.

The Miracle That Broke Their Pride

Out of that rock, a living, breathing she-camel walked out. It wasn’t a trick. It wasn’t magic. It was a clear, open miracle from Allah and a test. She was peaceful and she belonged to Allah. The command was simple: let her graze freely, and she would drink from the well one day while they drank the next.

This is the she-camel of Allah [sent] to you as a sign. So leave her to eat within Allah’s land and do not touch her with harm, or you will be taken by a painful punishment.” (Qur’an 7:73)

But instead of respecting the sign, they got angry. Her presence exposed their pride. Her calmness exposed their rebellion and her drinking from the well gave them an excuse. They said she was using too much water but deep down, they just couldn’t stand what she represented — a proof they couldn’t deny.

So they plotted. And with full support from the tribe, a group of them slaughtered her in cold blood.

"But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal upon all of them."
(Qur’an 91:14)

They didn’t kill her because they thought she was fake. They killed her because they knew she was real and they hated what that meant.

The Countdown Begins

After they killed the she-camel, Salih (peace be upon him) told them exactly what would happen:

"But they hamstrung her, so he said, 'Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is a promise not to be denied.'"
— Qur’an 11:65

They were given three days. Not as a chance to repent — their punishment was already sealed but as a final, terrifying countdown.

Each day, their faces changed color:

• Day 1: Yellow

• Day 2: Red

• Day 3: Black

This detail is preserved in tafsir works by scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari. It was a physical sign that their end was near. A visible reminder that they had crossed a line.

The Destruction

On the third day, the punishment struck. The Qur’an mentions multiple aspects of their destruction — a mighty blast (sayhah), a violent earthquake (rajfah), and their final state: lifeless bodies, collapsed in their homes.

“So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone.”
— Qur’an 7:78

“And the shriek seized those who had wronged, and they became within their homes [corpses] fallen prone.”
— Qur’an 11:67

“So the punishment seized them, and they became from it leveled to the ground.”
— Qur’an 27:52

According to classical tafsir like Ibn Kathir, both the shriek (sayhah) and earthquake (rajfah) were part of their punishment — unleashed together as a divine blow from different angles. The sound was so intense it shattered their insides, and the quake flattened their structures, leaving no survivors among the disbelievers. This wasn’t a natural disaster. It was divine justice. Not just destroyed — erased.

The Believers Survived

Not everyone in Thamud was arrogant. There were a small group of true believers who followed Prophet Salih and respected the she-camel. They didn’t plot. They didn’t join the murder. They stayed loyal to the truth, even when the rest of their tribe mocked them and when the she-camel was killed, Allah didn’t punish them along with the guilty.

Before the punishment came, Allah commanded Salih and the believers to leave. He warned them not to stay behind because a terrible punishment was coming and they obeyed. They left. Then came the signs. Once the destruction was over, Prophet Salih returned to the ruins of his people. The Qur’an says:

“Then he turned away from them and said, ‘O my people, I had certainly conveyed to you the message of my Lord and advised you, but you do not like advisors.’”
— Qur’an 7:79

This didn’t happen while he was leaving. It happened after the punishment when he came back and saw what was left. He didn’t smile. He didn’t celebrate. He mourned. He looked at the destruction and said those words in sorrow, knowing they brought it upon themselves. That was the end of Thamud but Allah left their story behind for a reason — so the rest of us learn the lesson from it.

Proof in Stone: What Still Remains

Thamud wasn’t a myth. And their punishment wasn’t just a story. The ruins still stand — carved deep into sandstone cliffs in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Today, the site is known as Mada’in Salih and in the Qur’an, it’s called Al-Hijr. It’s real. You can see it.

In 2008, UNESCO designated Madā’in Ṣāliḥ as a World Heritage Site — the first in Saudi Arabia. More than 130 monumental tombs still remain, many with inscriptions that date back over 2,000 years. The tombs are carved into glowing red cliffs, eerily similar to Petra in Jordan — not by coincidence, but because both were shaped by the Nabataeans, a powerful Arab civilization that rose after Thamūd.

Inside and around these tombs, archaeologists found inscriptions in Thamudic, Aramaic, and early Nabataean scripts — proof that multiple civilizations passed through, built, and traded in this region over time.

But the oldest layer — the one that matches the Qur’an — belongs to Thamud.

“And certainly did the companions of the stone valley [Al-Ḥijr] deny the messengers. And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away. And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure. But the shriek seized them in the morning.” — Qur’an 15:80–82

In the early 600s CE, the world watched a seemingly unstoppable empire collapse. The mighty Byzantines (Eastern Roman Empire) were being crushed by their longtime rivals, the Sassanid Persians. One by one, Roman provinces fell. In 614 CE, Jerusalem itself was captured, and the True Cross, one of the most sacred Christian relics, was taken. To many, this marked the end of the Christian Roman Empire.

But in the middle of the Arabian desert, a verse was revealed that would defy all logic and historical forecasting.

"The Romans have been defeated. In the nearest land. But they, after their defeat, will be victorious. Within a few years. To Allah belongs the command before and after. And that day the believers will rejoice."
(Qur'an, Surah Ar-Rum 30:2-4)

This verse stunned the pagan Quraysh in Mecca. It was revealed around 615 CE, shortly after the devastating Persian victory. At that moment, it appeared impossible that Rome could recover. Even the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) followers struggled under intense persecution. Yet the Qur’an didn't hedge, it declared with certainty that the Romans would not only recover, but do so within a precise time frame.

The War That Shook the World: Rome vs. Persia

To grasp the gravity of this prophecy, we must understand the conflict it references: the Byzantine–Sassanid War of 602–628 CE, the final and most brutal war between these superpowers.

• 602 CE: The war begins when Persian King Khosrow II invades after the assassination of Byzantine Emperor Maurice.

• 613–614 CE: Persia overruns Syria and Palestine. Jerusalem falls in 614, leading to a massacre and the seizure of Christian relics.

• 616 CE: Egypt falls to the Persians. Constantinople, the Roman capital, faces internal unrest and economic ruin.

By this time, even Christian observers in the empire had begun to despair. The Chronicle of Theophanes (c. 9th century) confirms that Heraclius, the Roman emperor, considered fleeing the empire and abandoning the throne.[1]

Meanwhile in Mecca, the pagan Quraysh idolaters and allies of the Zoroastrian Persians rejoiced. The Muslims, who considered the Romans as fellow monotheists (People of the Book), were mocked mercilessly.

The Meccan Reaction and Abu Bakr’s Wager

As the verse spread in Mecca, the Quraysh laughed: “Your people have been crushed. Your religion is false like theirs.”

Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, the Prophet’s closest companion, was so confident in the verse’s truth that he entered a bet (mubahala) with the Quraysh leader Ubayy ibn Khalaf, staking ten camels that the Romans would win within nine years, the interpretation of "bid‘ sinin" (Arabic for 3–9 years). This incident is documented in hadith collections and early sirah sources like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari.[2]

Later, when gambling was forbidden in Islam, the Prophet instructed Abu Bakr to treat the wager as a vow and to distribute its value as charity.

Qur’an (26:128-129): "Do you build on every height a monument for no purpose? And do you take for yourselves palaces as if you will live forever?"

The Prophet Hud was sent to guide them, urging them to worship one God and abandon their corruption. But Ad, like many before and after, ridiculed the message and saw themselves as untouchable.

Qur’an (41:15): "As for Ad, they were arrogant upon the Earth without right and said, 'Who is greater than us in strength?'"

They were soon answered by something they could not resist: a fierce, icy wind that blew for seven nights and eight days, obliterating everything in its path.

Qur’an (69:6-8): "And as for Ad, they were destroyed by a screaming, violent wind, which He imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession. So you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees."

Tracing Ad in Real History: The Lost City of Iram

The Qur’an refers to Ad as the people of Iram:

Qur’an (89:6-8): "Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with ʿĀd — [with] Iram, who had lofty pillars, the like of whom had never been created in the land?"

For centuries, Iram was thought to be a myth. But in the 1990s, archaeologists working with NASA satellite imagery discovered the remains of a collapsed city beneath the sands of the Rub’ al-Khali (the Empty Quarter) in Oman. This city, called Ubar, matched the Qur’anic descriptions: rich in trade, pillars, and regional influence.[1]

• Ubar sat on ancient frankincense trade routes

• Archaeological digs found evidence of collapse due to overuse of underground water and sudden geological failure

• The city was literally swallowed into the desert[2]

These discoveries, reported by archaeologist Nicholas Clapp and confirmed by satellite scans, align with the Qur’anic theme of a prosperous people suddenly erased from history.[3]

Long before the rise of empires and kings, before Sumer or Egypt built their first monuments, there lived a man named Nuh (Noah). Sent as a warner to his people, Nuh preached the oneness of God and warned of an overwhelming flood if they did not abandon their idolatry and immorality.

He preached for 950 years (Qur’an 29:14), yet only a handful followed him. The majority mocked him, ridiculed his message, and clung to the worship of false gods. Eventually, the command came from God: build an Ark. The storm would come.

Qur’an (11:36-37): "And it was revealed to Noah that, 'None of your people will believe except those who have already believed, so do not be distressed by what they have been doing. And construct the Ark under Our observation and Our inspiration...'"

Genesis 6:13-14 (Bible): "So God said to Noah, 'I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them... So make yourself an ark of cypress wood..."

And so, a flood was sent not just as a punishment, but as a cleansing of the Earth.

Historical and Archaeological Traces

Key Evidence and Theories:

• Mesopotamian Flood Layers: Excavations at sites like Ur (in modern-day Iraq) revealed thick layers of flood silt that separate early civilizations, suggesting a massive local flood.[1] This discovery was made by Leonard Woolley, who found a clean, artifact-free layer of silt up to 11 feet deep, signaling a sudden break in human occupation. While some initially believed this could be the flood of Nuh (Noah), others questioned: Was this the same event or just a local disaster?

  Woolley dated this flood layer to around 3500 BCE, and similar flood deposits were later found at Shuruppak and Kish, both of which are linked to ancient Mesopotamian flood legends. Islamic tradition holds that Nūḥ lived long before Ibrahim (Abraham), who is generally placed around 2000 BCE and that he preached to his people for 950 years, as the Qur’an states (Qur’an 29:14). While the Qur’an gives no specific date, classical Muslim scholars such as Ibn Kathir (Al-Bidayah wa’l-Nihayah), Al-Tabari (Tarikh al-Rusul wa-l-Muluk), and Al-Masʿudi (Murūj al-Dhahab) used genealogical traditions, narrations, and ancient Israeliyyat sources to estimate that Nūḥ may have lived sometime between 4000 and 3000 BCE. These approximations, based on 10 generations after Adam and the long lifespans of early people, loosely align with the timing of these ancient flood events in Mesopotamia.

  Though this does not prove that Woolley’s discovery is the flood of Nūḥ, it strongly suggests that a real catastrophe occurred in the same region and era—possibly forming the basis of what was later preserved in both scripture and legend. As the Qur’an reminds us, every nation is sent a warner, and when the truth is rejected, consequences follow sometimes so great that the earth itself becomes a witness to what took place (Qur’an 99:4–5).

• The Epic of Gilgamesh: A Sumerian story with an eerily similar flood narrative predating the Bible by centuries. Scholars believe it may be a cultural echo of the same historical event.[2]

A Flood Preserved on Ancient Tablets

The most compelling non-religious confirmation of a flood tradition comes from ancient Sumerian clay tablets, discovered in Nineveh and other Mesopotamian sites. These tablets, written in Akkadian cuneiform, preserve the famous story of Utnapishtim, a man warned by the gods about a divine flood.

This account is found in Tablet XI of the Epic of Gilgamesh, dated to around 2100–1800 BCE older than the Hebrew Bible. In the story, the gods instruct Utnapishtim to build a massive boat, bring animals aboard, survive a worldwide flood, and release birds to find land.

Epic of Gilgamesh, Tablet XI (lines 24–28):
“Tear down your house and build a boat! Abandon wealth and seek survival! Despise possessions and save life! Take all kinds of living things aboard the boat.”[8]

After the flood subsides, the boat rests on a mountain, and birds (a raven and dove) are sent out to find land — just like in the Biblical version.
